API (Application Programming Interface)

What is API (Application Programming Interface) ?

Technically, an API or ‘Application Programming Interface’ is defined as a specification of possible interactions with a software component. In layman terms, it is a way of making sure that one software can interact with another software easily.

APIs are used widely nowadays to make sure that multiple software functions together as a whole to make the whole experience seamless.

APIs increase the overall functionality of the software by being able to interact with other software, which in turn makes the whole process seem like a single system.

For example, consider the example of paying a salary based on the number of working days of the employee. In this case, the attendance management system has to use APIs to interact with the payroll management system to get the number of days the employee has worked for that particular month.
