Talent Stacking: The Secret to Outshining the Competition

We often see that it’s not the best but the unique that always stands out in the crowd. We all are looking for people who are not just at the top in their industry but are unique in what they do.

When you are the best in the industry, you become irreplaceable. But let’s be honest: not everyone can be the best in their field. But don’t worry, Talent Stacking is there to rescue you and allow you to be extraordinary in your own way.

The concept of talent stacking is coined by Scott Adams, the creator of the Dilbert comic and a Cartoonist. Talent stacking refers to creating a combination of skills that is unique to you and valuable in the industry. So instead of trying to be part of the top 1% in one skill you become one of the top 25% with a combination of the skills.

When you combine a bunch of skills that work well together to create something amazing, it can put you ahead of someone who might be better than you in some ways.

For example, an excellent idea can go unnoticed if not presented well but a mediocre idea can get a massive following because it was presented in just the right way. So, a person with mediocre ideas who is good at presenting their ideas in creative ways can make those ideas look extraordinary and become more valuable than someone with great ideas.

Creating a Talent Stack

  • List all your skills and talents, including technical and non-technical skills.
  • List all your passions that you are good at, these are the things you love to do and you don’t need to be the best in those.
  • Figure out what combination works the best and has the potential to bring great value to a business or to your personal brand.

Remember that you can always learn new skills to create your talent stack and you don’t have to be the best at one skill but good enough to make the talent stack you build valuable.

Talent stacking also makes the candidates more desirable to the companies. The skills that are listed in the job description are the essentials and most employees applying for the position are likely to possess them all. What makes someone stand out from the hip of resumes is that unique talent stack.

Summary

Talent stacking allows you to be at the top of your game even if you are not the best at any of those skills or talents. All you need is to figure out a combination of your skills and passion that works best. That makes you extraordinary and puts you among the top 25% in the industry.
